Getting Started

NOTE if you are transferring your existing website to BCA server you should read the Transfers page first.

Once your domain is setup on the BCA server you'll be able to browse to your website at www.your-domain-name. However at this stage it will show a rather boring index of an almost empty directory.

You will have been sent your Account Name and Password. With these you can logon to the various services that allow you to create and manage your website. See Logon Information for details of FTP, cPanel and Webmail.

To use FTP see Logon Information.

Generally the first thing you'll want to use FTP to upload your previously prepared website.

NOTE You'll see several directories. Your website files belong in the /www directory (which is linked to, same as the /public_html directory).

Note this is a Linux not a Windows server. So if you are copying a site from a Windows Server the two most likely problems are:

  1. Filenames are case-sensitive - “myfile.html” is not the same as “MyFile.html”.
  2. Permissions are important. In the case of doubt set your files to be rwx-rwx-rwx (chmod 777).


To go to your cPanel see Logon Information.

The Control Panel allows you to manage many aspects of your email and web hosting.

If you are going to use email click on the SpamAssasin Icon and check that it is enabled. SpamAssasin does its best to remove the spam from your email. If you are not using email make sure it is disabled to reduce the load on the server. There are other options but you can rely on the system defaults for the time being.

The simplest way to use email is to setup forwarders, click on the Forwarders Icon, that redirect the email to existing accounts on other systems.

If you want more advanced features such as WebMail then you will need to click on the Email Accounts Icon. Unlike a forwarder the email is stored until you download it to your local PC or delete it from WebMail. The space taken counts towards your total usage so check your email regularly :!:

To go to your WebMail see Logon Information.

Once you have setup an Email account you can use WebMail to read your email from any PC using a web browser such as FireFox, Internet Explorer or Safari. There is a choice of WebMail readers (Horde, SquirrelMail, Round Cube) which all do a similar job and can be used interchangeably. Try them out and pick your favourite.
